KBay Pier

The clouds over the Ko'Olau Mountain Range looked especially mystical on this day.  I stopped at the pier on Kaneohe Marine Corps Base to snap a few photos.  Often you can see amphibious landing craft parked here, but only fishermen dotted the docks this time.

V: Valley of the Temples

Valley of the Temples is actually a large cemetery containing not only thousands of grave sites, but also various temples.  The grandest one, and the main attraction, is the Byodo-In, an exact replica of a 950 year old Buddhist temple in Uji, Japan.  The grounds are a very lovely, serene place to visit for a half-hour or so.  For more 'V' photos please visit ABC Wednesday.

What's in a Name?

As I took this photo, I noticed the names of some of the boats - Rachel K., Captain Morgan, okay.  But Argo Navis, what does that mean?  Now some of you may already know this but since I didn't I decided to google it!  Here's what I found:

"Low on the southern horizon lies the crown jewel of spring equatorial skies. There are now six constellations among these stars.  These six constellations are the dismembered parts of a much larger constellation outlined by the ancient Greeks. They called it the Great Ship Argo Navis." (Pam Eastlick)

So there you have it, the Argo Navis.

Casting

A young man stands at the edge of Kaneohe Bay, contemplating where to cast his net.

It's All Black & White

I love the contrast created by the pieces of white coral (which have been bleached by the sun) nestled among the black lava rocks at Kaneohe Bay.

Retired for the Day

One of the canoes that sits on the shore of Kailua Beach.  In the background you can see Ulu-pa'u Head, home to Kaneohe Marine Corps Base.  This area is just barely connected to the rest of Oahu by a nearly flooded plain.

Fly-Over

I snapped this from my front yard when the Navy Blue Angels were performing at the nearby Kaneohe Marine Corps Base Airshow.  They fly so close together that it makes me cringe - really unbelievable!  Notice that you can barely see plane 2 peeking out from behind plane 3.  It's Skywatch Friday, so click HERE to see more sky photos from around the world.

View From My Paddleboard - Number Three

Monday means another photo taken while I was out on my board.  On this day, I enjoyed having the clear, calm waters of the cove near Kaneohe Marine Corps Base's campground all to myself.

Twilight Clearing

We've had a lot of rain lately, but on this evening the clouds parted over Kaneohe Bay just in time to reveal a magnificent sunset over the mountains.  It's Skywatch Friday, and you can see other sky images from around the world by clicking HERE.

View From My Paddleboard

Kaneohe Bay is one of my favorite places to use my stand-up paddleboard because the water is so calm and clear, and the view of the Ko'olaus is great.

Black Necked Stilt

These birds are endemic to Hawaii - I mostly see them at Nu'upia pond when I am driving on Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Base (which is where this one was).  The base is a protected habitat for thousands of birds - for a little more info about the species that nest there, click HERE.
