Two Daredevils

Wintertime means big waves on the North Shore.  A small part of me would love to be the camera-person you see in front of the surfer (but the other 99% of me would be terrified to stare up at a wall of water that big!).

B: Boogie Boarding

For obvious reasons, boogie boarding is very popular in Hawaii.  It's an inexpensive way to enjoy the waves and easy to get the hang of.  However, there are some places - like the wintertime North Shore and Sandy Beach - where the novices should stay on the shore!  This guy was quite good, doing lots of flips and turns in the large surf.  For other 'B' photos please visit ABC Wednesday.

Paddling Out

A boy and his board head out to take on the surf at a North Shore beach.  It was a windy day, so the mist blowing off of the crests made the scene more dramatic.

S: Surfing

It's that time of year on the North Shore - surf is higher and traffic backs up on the two lane road that runs parallel to the water, as rubberneckers try to catch a glimpse of the waves.  For more 'S' photos please visit ABC Wednesday.

R: Rolling Waves

I love it when the waves are coming ashore in quick succession and the wind is blowing, creating a trail of mist.  For other 'R' photos please visit ABC Wednesday.

Gone Fishing, Number Three

I was walking along this deserted North Shore path last weekend, and when I rounded the bend I saw a couple fishing there.  This looks like the perfect place to spend some time fishing - except that they weren't catching anything on this rough, windy day!

Banyan Tree

Can you believe this is all one single Banyan Tree?  It is amazing, and I've wanted to see it for awhile - finally found it this past weekend.  Like Papailoa Beach, it was also used as one of the filming locations for "Lost".

Turtle Bay Getaway

I haven't posted for the last three days because I took a little road trip with my family.  It was only 30 miles away - but that's about as far as you can go on this island!  We stayed at Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore, and had a great time just hanging out.  This was the view from our balcony and I had to snap a photo as soon as we arrived on Friday afternoon.

Tranquility

Watching the sun set over the Pacific was the perfect end to a perfect Saturday afternoon on the North Shore.  The hour before dusk is my favorite time to be on the beach.  For other sky images from around the world, visit Skywatch Friday.

Fleeting Footprints

Tiny waves were swirling and filling the footprints I'd just left behind in the wet sand at Waimea Bay.  The sand here is quite light and powdery, but the combination of water and rays from the setting sun gave it a nice orangey-brown glow.

A: Aoki's Shave Ice

It's time for another round of ABC Wednesday and to kick it off I decided to start with one of my favorite island treats - Aoki's Shave Ice.  I love the cherry flavor with ice cream on the bottom and condensed milk poured over the top - Mmmmm!

Hide and Seek

This guy kept popping in and out of the cracks in the large rocks at Papailoa Beach - this is as close as I got to a full shot of him!

Sea Turtle Season

During the summer, it is very easy to spot green sea turtles who come ashore to feed on the algae that grows abundantly.  Best bets for sighting one are Laniakea Beach (appropriately nicknamed Turtle Beach) and Papailoa Beach, both on the North Shore.

W: Waves!

I took this back in January when the waves on the North Shore made for terrific surf-watching.  For more 'W' photos, visit ABC Wednesday.

Sunset Beach Glory

After witnessing dusk arrive in all its brilliance here, it's easy to see why this strip of sand was named Sunset Beach.  For other sky images from around the world, visit Skywatch Friday.

S: Sea Turtle

During the summer months it's easy to spot green sea turtles on Oahu, especially at Laniakea Beach (appropriately nicknamed Turtle Beach) on the North Shore. They come ashore to feed on the algae there or bask in the sun. For more 'S' photos, visit ABC Wednesday HERE.

Respite

Ahhh...Papa'iloa Beach.  One of my favorites.  I don't know what makes me love it more than the others. Is it the afternoon shade offered by the palms, the stillness seldom found on other North Shore beaches, or the chance to spot a sea turtle sunning itself?
