Drops of Sunlight

It was a magical morning at Lanikai Beach, the kind that makes you feel like you are part of something special as you sit on the sand and watch the sunlight dance playfully on water that is so calm and clear it seems too good to be real.  For more sky photos from around the globe please check out Skywatch Friday.

Lanikai Dogs, #2

This fellow and his owner emerged from a quick swim this morning at Lanikai.  He was a handsome dog - he had the face and markings of a bird dog, and the size, body shape, and speed of a greyhound!

Winter Hike

The nice thing about doing sunrise hikes in Hawaii during the winter is that sunrise isn't until just after 7am (as opposed to just after 5:00am in the summer)!  Hawaii does not participate in Daylight Savings.  This was taken on a trail above Kailua and Lanikai - you can see one of the WWII pillboxes, with tiny Flat Island and Ulupa'u Head in the distance.  For more sky photos from around the world, please visit Skywatch Friday.

Top of the World

Well, the top of MY world anyway!  I took this after doing a pre-dawn hike up to the Lanikai Pillboxes with my sister in law.  We sat here and watched the sun rise, casting its light onto the black peaks of the Ko'Olau Mountain range and several offshore islands.  Truly a magnificent view!  For more sky images from around the world, please visit Skywatch Friday.

Lanikai Pillbox Hike

A girl sits on top of one of the World War II Pillboxes at Lanikai and photographs the sun as it rises over the ocean.

Brody

This is Brody, a beautiful dog I saw playing frisbee today at Lanikai Beach.  He was fast and quite a high jumper...and it was really comical to watch the way he lunged into the water to snatch up the frisbee one time, only to step into the waves with trepidation and wait for just the right moment to reach out for it the next time!

p.s. If Brody's owners see this and would like the other photos I took of him, please email me lisamlim03@gmail.com  :)

A Small Lonely Boat

Like a small lonely boat
sails on the Pacific.
no waves, no wind,
on all the sky-line.
Great is this peace,
calm, tranquility.
The silence so deep,
that one starts to dread.
Realizes how close
the opposite are joined.
The peace and unrest,
the joy and sorrow
the laugh and cry.
They do not fight
against one another,
they keep together,
always coexist.
Cannot you know
the one side of it,
cannot value
the WHOLE like One.

Goat's Foot?

Beach Morning Glory- also called Goat's Foot - grows in the sand at Lanikai and Kailua beaches.  I wonder how it got it's nickname "Goat's Foot" - anyone know?

Textures in Nature

I love the contrast in texture and color created by the lava rock and beach sand - a nice backdrop for the driftwood!

Photo of a Photo Shoot

I came across this photo shoot as I was walking on Lanikai Beach one morning - it is a popular place for fashion shoots and I have seen several others done here.

Tiny Beach Blossoms

These little beauties grow right next to the beach in Kailua and Lanikai - if you look closely you can see the grains of sand on the green leaves here.

Can't Catch Me

Wow, this dog was such a fast runner!  And though she looks very serious (even a little menacing) in this shot, she was really playful and friendly.

Lanikai Dogs

I took an early morning walk along Lanikai Beach, and as usual there were plenty of dogs out for some playtime with their owners.  I just couldn't choose between these two, so I had to post a photo of each of them.  The top one is the very playful one year old Lani, who was a full-speed-ahead-bundle-of-energy!  The bottom photo is the sweet almost 11 year old Gabby.

p.s. Parents of Lani and Gabby, if you'd like the other photos I took of your dogs please email me lisa_lim03@hotmail.com and I'll be happy to share them with you :)

Mokulua Nui

This is one of the Mokuluas, also called the "twin islands" or "Mokes".  They are located about a mile off the shore of the windward coast.  Both islands are protected seabird sanctuaries; however you are allowed to land your kayak at the beach there during the day.  For more info on the Mokuluas, click HERE.

Lanikai Sunrise

Earlier this week I got to watch the sunrise at Lanikai Beach with girlfriends while our kids played in the surf.  We should start more days that way!  It's Skywatch Friday, so click HERE to see other sky images from around the world.
